Students need help with things like books, housing and transportation. Community college is essentially free for all low income students via Pell Grants. Biden is also already using the HEA, the key this time around is to make sure it can survive legal challenges. Blanket forgiveness for all would get struck down quickly, now it would be tough to take the relief back once it is already offered but I can 120% see this Supreme Court doing that. Also with Biden’s new SAVE Plan college is incredibly affordable since you don’t have to make any payments unless you are making above 225% of the FPL and it is only 5% of your discretionary income above that. Canceling all of student debt sounds great but how does it address the issue of high tuition costs? Free community college for everyone, and doubling the current Pell Grant would go make a massive difference.
