The college loan debt should be forgiven completely because it should never have existed. It's the product of a predatory, economically unholy alliance of government/lenders/banks that thwarts the dreams of our young, setting people up for misery who should be entering the most creative and joy filled time of their lives. The colleges should pay off the college loan debt of their students. They benefited from these students taking loans. There's no reason other Americans should pay off those loans.

I agree that student loans are “predatory, economically unholy alliance of government/lenders/banks” but it is a choice students are forced to make. Address exorbitant costs of college FIRST. Why are tuitions rising? What is reasonable profit?

One's debt is another's asset. Someone will end up losing and it's likely it will be pensioners, retirement accounts or those with their cash in money market accounts. Be careful what you wish for Marianne. These students (and parents) knew full well they were entering into a contract and it needed to be paid eventually.
