This is as true today, and it speaks to the greatest danger in our midst. Our problem is not the threat of fascism, so much as it’s the complacency and lack of conviction with which we are facing the problem.
German poet Heinrich Heine was once asked why men no longer build cathedrals. He replied: “People in those old times had convictions; we moderns only have opinions. And it needs more than a mere opinion to erect a Gothic cathedral.” Cologne Cathedral took 632 years to complete. Does modern man have the necessary conviction to build something like this today?

The Culture Critic is poorly educated, ignoring nuance. And Heine a poet of the early 19th cent. (hard to find good translations) Romantic to the core.

I'm still trying to understand how the conserve destruction of fits into this political moment. Those buildings were erected over generations by people who shared a common religious perspective and a common community need. This moment is different.
