The values of the Declaration of Independence are profoundly humanitarian: All men are created equal, with inalienable rights (given by God) to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The values of trickle-down hyper-capitalistic economics are values-neutral, acknowledging no ethical responsibility to people or planet but only fiduciary responsibility to corporate stockholders. Our generation is confronted by the need to decide between the two.

It’s not a choice between them. American exceptionalism stems from our ability to embrace both!

The balance to which you refer is between honoring individual liberty, and a concern for the common good. Both matter equally. But individual liberty becomes mere license if it neglects all ethical consideration, harming the common good.

Did you never learn “Give a man a fish he eats for a day. Teach him to fish he eats for life.”? Doing for ourselves builds while living off others diminishes the soul. Would you really deprive people of the joy of accomplishment?
