The values of the Declaration of Independence are profoundly humanitarian: All men are created equal, with inalienable rights (given by God) to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The values of trickle-down hyper-capitalistic economics are values-neutral, acknowledging no ethical responsibility to people or planet but only fiduciary responsibility to corporate stockholders. Our generation is confronted by the need to decide between the two.

The balance to which you refer is between honoring individual liberty, and a concern for the common good. Both matter equally. But individual liberty becomes mere license if it neglects all ethical consideration, harming the common good.

It’s equal opportunity vs equal results. DOI was focused on the first, not the second. In fact, they wanted government to get the heck out of the way and let them determine their own destiny.

Natural rights are stand alone rights. You cannot force another person to bestow them or impede them. That is why freedom is so important. It is the very essence of rights. Apply this concept to your political stances.
