From Florida to Texas to New York, from Arkansas to Iowa to South Carolina, all around this country an authoritarian energy is gathering force and gaining ground. In Florida they are banning books. In Texas they are arresting parents for trying to ensure that others won’t lose their children in mass shootings the way they did. In New York they are arresting peaceful protesters. In Arkansas and Iowa they are gutting child labor laws. In South Carolina 21 legislators signed on to a bill that would execute women who had abortions. My hope is that this is simply a fever that will pass, much like McCarthyism in the 1950s. But we can’t be sure of that. All people of goodwill - on the left and on the right - have a responsibility now. We need to respond to this moment with a rededication to what freedom means, and a willingness to stand strong for it in every way that we can.

On the book banning thing, I’m ok banning books in elementary schools that show 1 little boy sucking another little boys penis. You disagree and thus you support pedophilia.

Stop looking in the mirror, that will help cut back on the authoritarianism that you're seeing.

Repeat after me, "Pornography is not for children".

There is no book banning going on. The public can buy any book it wants to. You’re trying to pretend that a legislature can’t decide the curriculum and materials that it supports with taxpayer money.

I fear that if it passes—IF—it will be only after violence the likes of which most Americans have never imagined.

@marwilliamson your credibility on all issues would be greatly strengthened if you would look at your own party with clarity. As others here have said, most of the censorship and totalitarian behavior is coming from the Democrats.

You're right that authoritianism gaining steam; but then you just list all the elements within the GOP, as if the DEMs are not equally doing similar things. This makes your post seem very hollow and insincere.
