When I was young, Eugene McCarthy and Bobby Kennedy challenged the sitting president, LBJ. No one thought it was weird for them to do so. In 1980, Teddy Kennedy challenged the sitting president, Jimmy Carter. No one thought it was weird for him to do so. People simply thought that was the democratic process. Because it is. The narrative that there's something *wrong* with challenging an incumbent president - as though there's an unwritten rule that it's a bad idea - is ridiculous. It's part of the "but it has to be this way" illusion by which political elites have trained people to limit our political imaginations for decades. People should run who feel moved to run, and everyone should have a chance to hear their ideas. Three people are running for the Democratic nomination in 2024 and three people should be seen together on a debate stage. *That* is the democratic way.

Well said!! However, it might be worth noting the reason they want to drag “weekend at bernie” across the finish line is so they can continue to dictate policy and then hand pick his successor. The key, of course, is that he is able to semi function until the primaries.

I suspect that there is a concern that Biden is not well enough and that his staff won't be able to pre-manage the setting and questions for him well enough so that he'd survive an intense debate. Even if a receiver and earpiece is inconspicuously embedded in his jacket and ear to feed him answers there's still the problem of unmanaged questions and responses of the other candidates. Fun note: I could swear I saw the lump of what must have been a receiver under the back of Bush's jacket in the Bush-Gore debates. In my opinion, Bush wasn't too sure where any country was except for maybe Texas(🙂), America, and Mexico. Whatever they did, it worked, to Gore's amazement and dismay. I was shocked afterward when some in the press declared it either a draw or even a win for Bush. Biden knows where other countries are; maybe just not all the time and maybe not when he is under stress.

It is so bizarre. Why do people think primaries are held for the incumbent President’s party? If an election is held, there should be debates between the top contenders.

Absolutely true.

Heard on the Big TV News this morning: Trump & @TuckerCarlson are discussing organization of an "alternative debate", free from the restraints of the Parties & the TV networks. (I'm for a non-partisan, open debate with weekly sessions, inviting All qualified candidates to come.)

We don't have a leader. We have a figurehead. It is time to change this farce.
