Authoritarianism attacks democracy from the outside, while neoliberalism erodes it from the inside. There is no way to effectively deal with one without dealing with the other. One is a disease; the other, a systemic weakening of the immune system in a way that strengthens the disease.

I understand many use "neoliberalism" to mean what we call "conservatism" in the USA (a usage supported by conservatives wanting to muddy the water about "liberalism" and also an invisibility cloak for themselves, and people abroad) but it's a bit like the tail wagging the dog.

I agree, this is why FDR said if we do not have security here at home we cannot have lasting peace in the world. This was part of his speech detailing his proposed second bill of rights.
