BREAKING: The Iowa Senate passed a child labor law before dawn today. The bill lets 14-year-olds work 6-hour night shifts, 15-year-olds work on assembly lines, and 16- and 17-year-olds serve alcohol. The Senate went through the night, and voted on child labor at 4:52 a.m.

It’s only the serving alcohol that makes me uncomfortable, but I’m skeptical. Going in blind, I’d guess it means selling at stores, not bars, which would be fine.

I worked 6-hour night shifts at age 14 (not every night) and served beer at age 18. My teenage job gave me a good work ethic and the freedom to spend the money I earned on whatever I wanted.
