When the Founders wrote the Second Amendment, the largest guns they had were muskets. The modern bullet had not yet been invented. They could only shoot one bullet at a time. Today’s assault weapon would be like the power of a cannon to them. The Second Amendment is NOT a legitimate reason not to ban assault weapons. Ban them now.

When the founders wrote the Constitution (before the second amendment was ratified) they wrote that Congress could make private ship owners into Privateers authorized to wage WAR on the open seas. (Letters of Marque and Reprisal)(Art I Sec 8) Cannons > Muskets Your argument fails

When the Founders wrote the Second Amendment the central Government was a lot smaller too however The Shall not be Infringed was aimed at all levels of Government no matter how big or modern it gets.

The largest guns they had were cannons formerly used by militia companies (The people - civilians) in coastal fortifications, and on ships. Later they captured them from British in battles or got the from Europe, primarily France. They could shoot grapeshot (several large balls) or cannon balls.

The 2nd Amendment was designed for citizens to keep and bear the same types of arms as others they might have to defend against. Including governments.

When the founders wrote the 2A, private individuals could own cannons, privateers (warships), and even their own private armies. Can we return to that?
