When the Founders wrote the Second Amendment, the largest guns they had were muskets. The modern bullet had not yet been invented. They could only shoot one bullet at a time. Today’s assault weapon would be like the power of a cannon to them. The Second Amendment is NOT a legitimate reason not to ban assault weapons. Ban them now.

While the Second Amendment may protect the right to bear arms, it does not necessarily protect the right to own any type of weapon. As a society, we must determine which weapons are appropriate for civilian ownership and which pose too great a risk to public safety.

Why did the first amendment "evolve" from quill pens and ink wells to computers and the internet, but the second amendment is stuck in the 1700's? It says "ARMS", not "MUSKETS" for a reason.

The founders wanted people to be able to defend themselves against tyrannical government authorities. Are you suggesting we "trust the institutions"?

Marianne, this is factually incorrect. When the Founders wrote the 2nd Amendment, they had cannons, and puckle guns (automatic early machine guns), and it was legal and encouraged for private citizens to own armed warships.

Do you understand what relative to something means? Just stop, from repeating rifles to semi automatic, it's all relative. When Samuel Colt innovated did the federal government look to rewrite the second?
