For the same reason we're in every other country—the preservation of US imperial hegemony for the purpose of resource extraction. That includes the Ukraine, btw, which is already selling off bits and pieces.

Don't ask why is you already know. It saves money to have a pipeline cutting across Syria into Eastern Europe than go through the Suez and across the Mediterranean. Didn't matter if Beruit was taking Iraqi oil, as long as an invasion would be fiscally cheap, not humanely cheap.
