I cannot even imagine what it would be like to be in your Twenties and carry tens of thousands of dollars of college loan debt. And we wonder where the mental health crisis comes from? Economic anxiety is a pit of despair. Every American should realize that college and public universities were tuition free up until the mid-1960s. Unfettered capitalism is ravenous in its search for a profit center, even if it emerges from or causes human suffering. How dare we tell young people they should have respect for capitalism when they. have. no. capital! None of this will change until we change it. #ANewBeginning

Make the colleges pay. Not blue collar taxpayers.

That’s says a hell of a lot about the failure of our public education system teaching financial literacy/workforce development/viable career choice & our ‘elite’ culture of pushing college over trades, apprenticeships, entrepreneurs. Repair the source. The $ well has run dry.

Where exactly did you dig up that “fact” about college’s being tuition free until the 1950s! I can assure you that Harvard has been around for a long time and it was never tuition free, same goes for Yale etc.

I can not even imagine what it would be like to be any age and think contractually borrowed money does not need to be repaid

I didn't experience mental health issues during the time I paid off my student loans. And when I had some tight times they were willing to work with me to suspend payments without penalties till I could resume payments. And if you do go into default it is easy to come out.

"I cannot even imagine what it would be like to be in your Twenties and carry tens of thousands of dollars of college loan debt." Then in your imaginary scenario, it would be wise to make a different decision, wouldn't it?

Tools me 12 years to pay them off. 125k with a lot of education plus my masters. The only way I could pay it off was because a private bank gave me 2.99% when the feds stuck me with 7.49%. If I kept it in the government hands I would be still be paying them off.
