Shell agreed to pay $16million to four Nigerian farmers and their communities to compensate for damage caused by pollution from leaks in its oil pipelines The sum was negotiated between the oil company and "Friends of the Earth"... Unfortunitely with "No Admission of Liability"

My goodness, started in 2008 and two of the four original filers have died since. Land ruined throughout the area. What a nightmare situation. I feel for those people even after this win

16 million is a win for the oil company, it should be 16 billion
Shell will post global profits in the region of $30bn this year. It's cheaper for them to allow pollution and pay compensation, than it is to prevent the pollution. Fines need to be higher with jail time for senior executives in order to prevent reoccurrences.

Fines don't do shit. They keep leveling fines on bankers, corporations, etc and nothing changes. Start putting these people in jail
