In 1979, President Carter had solar panels installed at the White House. These were later laughed at, derided and removed by officials of Reagan Administration.

I remember these times from my childhood, when people like those who removed the panels (out of spite) would shake their heads, cluck their tongues, as though being an environmentalist was a foolish thing and they (taking down panels out of spite) were the adults.
