Past nuclear doctrines were best summed-up by a often-repeated joint statement from US and Soviet leaders Reagan and Gorbachev: "A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought." Today, some argue that limited nuclear war is acceptable. That is insane.

I get the dream here, but as a counterpoint, if nukes didn’t exist, how many bloody, conventional conflicts would have been fought among the great powers since the close of WWII? How many proxy wars simmering under nuclear tension could have turned in to direct engagements?

I actually can't think of a war we didn't get around to.

Right, but thinking of any of these wars, could the conventional footprint have been wider if there wasn’t the existential threat of escalation and brinksmanship on the other end of it? Just trying to play devil’s advocate here, that’s all. Continue to enjoy your thoughts. 🤝🏽
