BREAKING: Chile is voting today on what is likely the most modern Constitution ever written — one that allows Indigenous peoples real sovereignty. Momentous. Compare: only white men (many slaveholders) wrote the US version 250 yrs ago. Think about it. americasquarterly.org/articl…

The US clearly needs a new constitution. It needs a representative Congress with mutiple parties to allow more diverse voices and encourage real collaboration and compromise. It's overdue.

There is nothing at all in the Constitution about political parties. George Washington warned us against them and John Adams said they were the greatest threat to our democracy. It’s true though that if they had created a parliamentary system more voices would now be heard.

Structure is the issue, IMHO. Every election is winner takes all, whoever gets the most votes wins. Fringe parties/candidates would need to break through, but the two big-tent parties control the political dialog. Diverse voices don't have much of a chance.

Only if it was based on a PR voting system. In the UK we have a parliament controlled by a party and PM, with unfettered power, which was elected on only 43% of the vote. That needs to change.
Our understanding of politics (among many other subjects) has evolved in 250 years. Formally recognizing that parties exist allows you to work with AND around them.
