Important to remember that history does not move in a straight line. Things can get worse and then get better again.
On Sunday the Chilean people can vote for a new constitution, replacing the old anti-democratic one written by the dictator Pinochet with a new one guaranteeing rights to health, housing, education, and a habitable planet. I am proud to support this effort.

I remember Arthur Schlesinger's "The Cycles of American History" (1986), which argued US history was a cycle alternating between conservative/reactionary and progressive/radical phases. Seems to me in socioeconomic terms you've been stuck in the former for more than 40 years.

Yes, very important to remember, along with the old & famous line: it's always darkest before the dawn. If one considers history, such as presented by the late great historian Howard Zinn, we should always remember how surprisingly fast history can turn from dark to bright.

History does not move in a straight line. I disagree. Take a look at the families that ran the world a thousand years ago. They are the same families that run it now. For them? It is VERY linear.

What's important to remember is that socialists are the greatest murderers in human history.

All systems devolve into corruption and anarchy @marwilliamson. The problem is power seeks power and its an insatiable need. Unfortuneately the end of this story was written a long time ago and it doesn't end well.

That鈥檚 what I expect in the US

Yes, quite true. However, they can get worse鈥攁nd then get worser. Reagan was an embarrassment. Later we reached a pathetic nadir with the bellicose George W. Bush. After Trump, it would be naive not to understand things could get much, much worse.
Lol the Chilean people saw how far left, bat shit crazy the new proposed constitution was and the shot it down by a huge margin. Bravo
