Mikhail Gorbachev was a visionary leader. The refusal of the U.S. to help Russia when the Soviet Union collapsed was typical of America's arrogance and lack of visionary foreign policy. If we had helped Gorbachev then, Russia's path would probably have not been toward a Putin.

@Kasparov63 might differ on this remarkably ignorant take.

Bush Sr idiotic fuckup, not creating a Marshall plan by the West to help Russia and the USSR components. Would have been cheap insurance and chance at end of nuclear weapons world wide. So Conservatives, how'd that whole 'pick themselves up by their bootstraps' thing work out?

It was much worse than that. The US engineered the collapse by imposing an overnight radical privatization program on the Soviets. Engineered by none other than Jeffrey Sachs. It enabled western asset stripping and the rise of the oligarchs. Even he called it shock therapy.

That is how this went down. We were alive at that time and lived through the collapse of the Soviet Union. The US never refused to help Russia. In fact, they sent 28 billion in aid. Read and learn: sgp.fas.org/crs/row/RL32866.…

And yet, while I can hope this would be the reality, Putin was just another byproduct of western economic hegemony. They came in and sliced it up like a meat pie with their Russian counterparts. Now we reap the fruits of their profit margins.

possibly true but you're leaving out prophecy. Putin, Trump and Kim represent the satanic triad. somebody got to be the devil and God don't really care who plays that role. read revelations 13th chap. Russia reps the bear.
