Mikhail Gorbachev was a visionary leader. The refusal of the U.S. to help Russia when the Soviet Union collapsed was typical of America's arrogance and lack of visionary foreign policy. If we had helped Gorbachev then, Russia's path would probably have not been toward a Putin.

You have literally no way of knowing that, at all. Putin or someone similar was much more likely given centuries of Russian history and culture with nothing but tyrants and authoritative government, from the czars to the socialist dictators.

YES! I argued then we ought invite Russia into NATO. Odd thing is I can see that now too! Imagine that. & into the EU too. This dysfunctional relationship between Europe & Russia been going on for 100s of years. & those that architected that blunder continued to now w/China too.

Helping out Japan and Germany back fired in some Political-Economic Elite circles...Why would they repeat that mistake? Truthfully...by 1980 both had lots of economic power AGAINST 'Murica! Just imagine Russia today under a modified Marshall Plan?!? Scary...

Refused to help? Like all the vast financial and technical assistance? Or pressuring Ukraine to hand over all nuclear weapons to Russia in 1994 under the Budapest Memorandum? Or going softly on Yeltsin on Chechnya and abuses of democracy?

I went to Russia in the early 90's to help. Small example, but help comes from other sources.
