He's the one who's ignorant of world history. There are hybrid socialist/capitalist economies in Europe and elsewhere that have less poverty and arguably greater freedom than we do in the United States.

Most have Europe have failed economies with no growth, no innovation, may not have poverty but, no one is doing to well. It’s a very very poor model to follow. The best economy is in the USA and has been for many years. Why ruin it with socialism?

Sure, you hybrid societies are slowly committing suicide. Low birthrates, high unemployment rates, low innovation rates, I can go on but you get the idea. Almost everyone with some ambition moves to the US.
