Why is life expectancy in the United States so bad? It seems perverse to be richer than these other countries but falling behind in something as basic as “not dying.”

Plain and simple. Lack of universal healthcare.

Everything is simple when you're posting 240 characters on Twitter. There's no effect from drugs, obesity, poor minorities, homelessness, suicide, homicide, disproportionate incidence of COVID, and a million other things?

Why did it plateau after 2005 then? The healthcare system difference between say US and Canada long predate that.

Simple, yes. Accurate, no.
Why can't we be honest and talk about the fact that Americans need to lose weight. Probably about 15 lbs
That's part of why we are behind. But we've lacked universal healthcare for a long time. Skyrocketing obesity and deaths of despair including suicide and overdoses are the reason for the shift and single payer healthcare or an NHS like system are only a partial solution.
I joined the military, so my kids have not-free universal health care. And yet, they still get sick. Next?
And car dependent lifestyles.
That and letting corporations pollute our air and water, price gouge on medicine, and aggressively market opioids as non-addictive.
Plain and simple. obesity. Americans are out of shape and overweight. Deadly combination.
