The reason Americans don’t trust our institutions is because the institutions have proven themselves untrustworthy. From Congress to SCOTUS to WH to big business, institutions expected to be at least on some level responsible to the people have been exploitative and even cruel.

Republicas are now being cruel. Cruelty can come in many forms. You don’t need to commit a direct act. Also, indirect acts such as preventing all reforms and bills now needed is a form of cruelty for negligence to act. When you hold a position of power you are supposed to act.
