This was normal Sunday morning breakfast when I was growing up: My uncles: “Don’t listen to your dad kids, you’ll never make any money.” My father: “Don’t listen to your uncles kids, they won’t survive the revolution.” My mother: “So who wants whitefish and who wants lox?”

Would not have expected this from a girl named Marianne. Also, we'd have a little bit lox and a little bit whitefish.

When I told my mother that Marianne sounded pretty New Testament to me, she kept saying “It’s French!! It’s French!!” :)

My background is similar. I was the only Elizabeth in a Brooklyn high school full of Barbaras, Phyllises, and Judys. My parents were "aspirational," and I wonder if yours were too (given the results!)(Lovely to talk to you.)
