America won't be able to course-correct in the present until we're willing to own the past; that applies to immigration as well as to everything else.

If the US hadn't intervened so often in Latin America over the years, suppressing even democratically elected governments when they didn't serve US corporate interests, many of their economies would never have become so destabilized to begin with.

Demonizing immigrant populations whose desperation stems in large part from our own malfeasance is a national character defect, the result of an imperialistic arrogance now coming up for us to review, dissolve and heal. The world will become a better place when we do.

Agreed. But we can’t fit the entire third worl population into this country. We have severe poverty here, hunger kids, destitute families. How do we keep taking millions of people in here?

We need to admit to ... and accept the consequences of ... Our Bad Behavior ... especially toward Latin America!

I think a major step would be to make sure we aren't still doing it and that we will not do it in the future

Nonsense. More Blame America First. We made many mistakes in Central America, but the corruption and lack of strong institutions is not our fault. Also, there were some very dangerous factions south of the border.

I wouldn't say problems in other countries are complelly our own, but there is def something to do with it.

No one is demonizing illegal immigrants, what we’re demonizing is the open borders we have that allows little kids to be trafficked and raped by the cartels and human smugglers, and then the drug smugglers go around the other way while border patrol is dealing with the ppl.

Indeed. Add to the wars and overthrow of governments the fact that the global north still depends on extracted resources and exploited workers of the global south. Throw in trade agreements that hurt the poor, throw in climate change. A vicious cycle.

Some people never grow out of ultra-nationalism. Those who either lived it or were born to those who did, know better, though.
