I've noticed in my life that when I've felt hopeless and like I couldn't go on, the people who've said "Oh get over yourself and toughen up!" have actually done more for me than those who however well intentioned probably let me stay on the phone too long describing my despair.

I feel the same way. Acknowledge the depression, validate the anxiety but don’t lean into it. Its like my generation wants to wallow in their negatively for sake of validation. I get past generations wrongfully didn’t even acknowledge it. But why go from one extreme to the next?

Not helpful if you end up feeling pressured beyond your limits. I have found the most helpful attitude to be of those, who simultaneously offered compassion and made it clear that my decisions were up to me alone.

What helped me is stopping trying to tell people how to live their lives and focus on my own life… how I could help them and not judge them for the choices they make.

That’s what my narcissist mother did to me. Invalidates every single feeling I ever had. Some folks need different things from friends.

It’s a fine line. I know what you mean but … The unsympathetic can make suicide more likely in someone who is in the wrong headspace.

Doesn’t sound like something that would help us with cPTSD lol. Kindness and compassion are a safe space when triggered by old trauma. Perhaps there is a delineation to figure out the right timing for that approach?
