I've noticed in my life that when I've felt hopeless and like I couldn't go on, the people who've said "Oh get over yourself and toughen up!" have actually done more for me than those who however well intentioned probably let me stay on the phone too long describing my despair.

YOU really DO need help. Tell that to Naomi Judds family and friends and Kailua Posey, 16 years old, from Toddlers and Tiaras family and friends.

Except that’s the only response I’ve ever heard when I needed actual material help or any kind of meaningful support from anyone outside of my immediate family. I agree that there is a time and place for that response, but it’s also a cop-out and an excuse to do nothing.

"Get over yourself"? Really? That might work for you but it can be very destructive for others, depending on their circumstances.

That would probably end our friendship. That is hurtful and cruel and lets me know that they do not care about my pain.

Don’t think there’s a universal solution here

Amen. There are times for courageous leadership, and this is one of them. Of course people's feelings of fear and hopelessness must be acknowledged, but then we must fight back - and fight hard. This moment requires courageous leaders.

"Oh, get over yourself and get over it" is nonsense. Would you say that to someone dealing with issues related to addiction, abuse, childhood neglect or rape? Get over it means ignore the problem. "What's the core issue and how can we resolve it" is the healthier response.

I’m the same, but I think it depends on what type of person you are. I shouldn’t wallow.

I agree! Too often mulling over the hardship does nothing but make it worse. Life is full of tough moments… to “just toughen up and move on” is a great skill to have.
