I surmise it was the rise of mega churches, touting the money you give the ministry will come back to you multiple times over. It’s not a sin to be rich, yadda yadda… This was important for adherents. Admire the ministry that were living like royalty. It grew from there.

America is not a Christian country; it’s a pagan country with a few Christians. If it was a Christian country it would be unrecognizable from what it is today.
