There was also a very large Socialist movement going on in the US before he was elected. He took many of the Socialist platforms ideas and incorporated them into his platform.

For all their braying about “democracy,” modern progressives are remarkably comfortable with the executive branch making law (and, as here, enjoying reign-like longevity).
FDR imprisoned hundreds of thousands of working class people and took their property on the explicit basis of race, and the new deal did not generally speaking benefit African Americans.
