America has lost its capacity to respond to an emergency. Materialism and consumerism have made us dense and sluggish and unable, or unwilling, to collectively respond to even dangers in our midst.

I would hope that your point is taken to heart and generates much self-inquiry. Yes, capitalism has become evil in its unchained pursuit of greed but it has to have an over-consumptive and anticipatory population. Too many citizens have become neutered in a functional sense.

Katrina might have been the wake up call people needed. It was a culmination of capitalist and gov't failures-climate, infrastructure, and inequality-but nothing changed. Instead, we bailed out the banks shortly thereafter.

We’ve all been domesticated by the industrial system. We can blame crony capitalism all we want, and it’s fair to, but ultimately it’s our responsibility to undomesticate ourselves.
