Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan is looking better and better. It wouldn't be a good time to have U.S. soldiers as targets in Afghanistan for a well-equipped Taliban newly backed by Russia (and probably China).

Anyone who mocked Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan should have be shamed into silence on Russia-Ukraine. The Afghanistan withdrawal was a strategic masterstroke.

The Afghanistan withdrawal was not only a strategic masterstroke, it was also incredibly well done. I'm not being sarcastic, I've never seen a more gross distortion of an operation than that. It is insanely hard to withdraw from Afghanistan and the U.S. lost just 13 soldiers.

Only if women don’t matter, Matt. Thousands of women whose escape should have been prioritized were neglected and abandoned. The evacuation could have been achieved far more humanely and effectively. The narrative that “there was no easy way to do it” is not an excuse for that.

A lot of people were harmed by the war and the withdrawal, but in my view there was no way to avoid that. There has never been a better withdrawal from Kabul. So either it's withdraw with sad consequences or stay with worse consequences.

Yes of course we needed to go. But according to many female activists whose views were and are consistently erased about this, it's simply not accurate to say there was no way to avoid doing a better job at it, vis a vis the women were by far the most vulnerable to Taliban abuse.

If the US cared about Afghani women, the US would not have armed women-hating Islamicists back in 1979 before the Soviet invasion or allied with men who rape boys for 20 years.
You're supposed to pretend the only options are "withdrawal like Biden did" or "no withdrawal." You're not playing the game correctly.

I've listened to several highly placed women activists who worked in Afghanistan or worked closely with women there, who have a very different take on this that officialdom's "we couldn't have done it any better." It could have been done *much, much* better vis a vis those women.
