Absofuckinlutely. Every policy the world has followed regarding nuclear power has relied on a distinctly fragile premise: that no insane person would get near it. Time to get over that now.
Today would be a very good day to stop the construction of new nuclear power plants and move to decommission nuclear power plants throughout the world.

But how would we power the planet, with current technology, without burning more fossil fuels? Renewables are a great thing, but implementation isn’t possible on a global scale right now…

It IS possible if we make it possible. It’s only a lack of political will that keeps humanity from making the urgently needed immediate just transition from dirty to clean energy.

No I don’t think the world can afford to build the wind, solar and storage that we need, without getting rid of money altogether, right now. If we can get fusion working then we have a chance,

The Brits are moving faster on this, I read, than had previously been predicted.

The damage to the environment from trying to power a modern society with wind and solar would be more than the environmental impact of nuclear by a factor of about 10,000. No one who advocates for wind and solar cares about the planet, much less for the people on it

There is no such thing as clean energy.
it's not a political problem, it's an engineering problem
Nuclear energy is clean energy. We still operate reactors designed in the 60s built in the 70s. Designs of 2020s are here but political will to make the transition is not. All spent fuel since 1950s could fit in a single football field. The fuel can also be recycled.

Marianne, I absolutely agree with you and believe geothermal is one of the best ways for creating safe energy all over the world long-term. There are companies and people working on it. The challenge so far has been expense. Iceland is a good example of it currently though.
