I can't stand this dude for a lot of reasons but I think he was genuinely being sarcastic here. The speech he gave is probably available somewhere so that should tell us more.

I never thought I would see such denial and hatred. Then again, I never thought I'd see it in my own family. And now too many things "of the past" make too much sense. And it's sad. And it hurts. And it makes our determination to bring forth what is just and right stronger.
