1/ $780 billion a year is our military budget. We invaded Iraq although it never did anything to us. We stayed in Afghanistan at least 10 years longer than we needed to, doing nothing to bolster a democratic government.

2/ Yet now, with Ukrainians at risk of being slaughtered en masse by a madman, there’s not more we could do and could have done to help them defend themselves?

We've been sending them millions in foreign aid since Obama's presidency. If they've somehow squandered all of that, why the fuck would we send them more?! ua.usembassy.gov/fact-sheet-…

I concur with your sentiments. The problem is we’d be looking at a civilization-ending war. The time to prevent this was before it started. We had 30 years, but we were too busy being the unipolar superpower that did everything with impunity. That world ended this week.

Is it truly because Ukraine doesn’t belong to NATO (under threat by Putin)?

We should have kept out of it under Obama instead of aiding the coup that threw out the elected government.

What could we have done? What would “helping them defend themselves?” have looked like? More weapons doesn’t seem like the right answer here.

Marianne we try to avoid war with Russia because of the potential for it to lead to nuclear Armageddon……

Yes, the system of making war is a sick system. Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Vietnam, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, World Wars, the cycle of destruction is perpetual. Only when we start to see to the core of what feeds wars within ourselves and in our world, can we heal.

Such a brilliant question.

There is the risk that should Nato or the US get involved, or have gotten involved, World War III would be the most likely outcome. Hence it would have to be the Europeans that give support to Ukraine. They are also in NATO though, so it is difficult.
