It's not an extremist position to argue that no one should go hungry or without medical care in the richest country in the world; what's extremist is the idea that such things are tolerable.

It's not merely more humane, but addressing more present, root issues doesn't bury the long term costs in foggy externalities or worse privatized corporate grifting programs. (Though that bug may be the main feature to our cruel and dystopic management of priorities.)
