Go read some of Philip K. Dick’s darker, more dystopian stories. He foresaw much of this and it didn’t look pleasant.

There's trillions of $ involved so there's no moving forward without addressing the profit motive both in terms of weapons sales and global economic hegemony. The US is both capitalist and imperialist. No pol wants to preside over the decline of US power.
