Complication is a breeding ground for obfuscation and manipulation too. Take 7,000 pages of tax code to define "income" for example.

I'm sure this is very true ... In addition, I also think the problem is "SCARCITY" ... The belief that the pie is only so big ... and If we create new programs for the poor ... there will be less for ME!

The late Howard Zinn notice that one of the primary goals of the "powers that be" was/is to dupe us into trading away our citizenship (with all of it's rights & responsibilities) to become full-time consumers.

The real problem is people fall for it because they don't understand how those jobs work either, so where would they even start making an educated guess what candidate they think fits any given role on the merits?

One I'll never for get... someone trying to attack, ya know... "socialism"... with a long list of meaningless "we can't just start giving..." kinds of speeches... and at the end said... "what concerns us most, is what we Don't know."
