I just want everybody to be free to live their lives as normal, without discrimination, coercion, or segregation. How on earth is this 'controversial'?

When the Dec of Ind declared "all men are created equal" & endowed by God w/ "inalienable rights to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness," that was a radical challenge to the aristocratic paradigm of the day. It was radical then and for the very same reason it's radical today

You forget something regarding God. The real Jesus was absolutely radical. That's why the political and religious leaders nailed him up. Most so called christians follow a fake jesus, one approved by political and religious systems.
