Zuckerburg changing FB to Meta & saying they're going to be concentrating on virtual reality is not good news. It could be a fast track to the worst things possible. Anyone will be able to create holograms of the prez talking, for instance, but you won't really know if it's her.

your heart is in the right place but you’re a little wrong on this one. that won’t be coming from the metaverse—although it may make its way into it eventually—it is already happening outside of it. VR doesn’t implicitly have anything to do with deepfaking of audio and video

Nothing like how it will be happening with this.

i went into a longer explanation in my comments. but the short story is: it will eventually be just as dangerous and more, but VR worlds aren’t far enough along yet to do the things you mentioned, and socially we won’t put as much valence in VR content as “real world” for a while

Now it will have the money & heft of *Zuckerberg* behind it. That takes it to a whole new place; we can't know how quickly or slowly it will progress. I doubt he would have done it if he weren't already pretty far along. We have to concern ourselves with both real AND unreal now

well i’ll never disagree that it’s bad. but they’re also not very good at product development despite engineering talent. so i am not so sure there is some secret manhattan project waiting to take the next VR leap, especially because of hardware constraints inherent to VR
