The real dichotomy now is not between left and right; that’s sort of a smokescreen. The real dichotomy is between corporate and non-corporate. It’s not really a duopoly so much as a monopoly of corporate power with two wings.

maybe the "dichotomy" is an ideological inability, coupled with a cultural identity that can not arrive at homeostais - self annihilation.
The only true anti-corporate faction of the electorate is on the left. One could easily argue that a plan to draw the anti-corporate voters to a new party works in favor of corporate interests. We have a winner-take-all system, not a parliamentary one with coalitions.

Big Money Rules. basic capitalism and human nature just are not compatible. It’s going to take a revolution. Term limits will never happen, neither will a rational, complete over hall of the tax codes or limiting the numbers of lobbyists and money spent. We failed.
