There are plenty of nations in this world that wish is harm. Much of the defense spending is not used to make things go boom, but to keep an eye on them.

When will we be defended against American Nazis?

It employs millions of people, it pushes the edges of science and technology to the max, and it deters our enemies and potential enemies from doing bad. Also, if we need to throw a punch or two we can do so at any time anywhere.
