This is one of Michelangelo’s “Prisoners.” He somehow saw a body in a block of marble that needed to be freed by his chisel. Imagine seeing every project or obstacle in our lives this way, as an unfinished masterpiece waiting to be liberated. I think about this all the time. 👊🏻❤️

He said that in his mind God had already created the Pieta, David, Moses, etc.- that his job was to get rid of the excess marble.

Yes. It’s an incredible explanation of his work process. My evangelical dad told me at the time, that my emotional reaction to these sculptures, at 16, was god revealing himself to me. Even as a non-believer, this was a magical explanation of what I felt. So grateful. ❤️
