Tolerance of systemic violence against women can’t be justified in the name of anti-imperialism, helping other human beings isn’t “a savior complex,” and leaving the most powerless & desperate people to fend for themselves in the hour of their agony isn’t political sophistication

The military industrial complex spent nearly $100 billion, and 20 years, training the Afghan government forces. They're falling in less than a month. It is the height of privilege to watch what's happening unfold and think anything other than "they never wanted us there".

Nearly 250,000 civilians have been killed in the US invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. How many more civilians have to be mass-murdered before feminism is achieved there?

And now 20 million women and girls will live in terror, plus who knows how many people will be killed. Does that even things out for you? Standing up for women isn't a joke, even if it is for you. I'm not even saying we should have stayed - it's complicated - but give me a break.

Smart move, Marianne. Stay on message. Ignore the US government’s mass murder of civilians and stick to those talking points.

It wasn't a joke. It's an acknowledgement that this was always doomed to fail. Far too many people have been killed or permanently scarred continuing this mess, American and Afghan. It never should have been done in the first place.

“20 million women and girls will live in terror”.Everyone has been in terror for over 20 yrs thanks to taliban, warlords, and drone strikes.terrible place before terrible place now. At least our soldiers won’t have to protect warlords and poppy fields while they hear boys be raped
You are acting as if they've been free this whole time.
Then maybe the US shouldn't have imported and propped up wahabism in Afghanistan in the first place. Maybe they should cut ties with Saudi Arabia, where their treatment of females is comparable. What even is your stance here??

The US is not the moral arbiter of the world. We can't impose our will everywhere you think is bad. You are literally just a neocon at this point.
I wonder if our culture (lately) hasn’t aided the Taliban in winning over the people, or at least convincing them freedom/equality really aren’t worth fighting for.
The fact that you keep saying “it’s complicated” shows you’re still defending American imperialism. Joe just told you - Afghanistan was not about nation building. Afghanistan was a means to an end for the US.

Could we please just *acknowledge* the horror 20 million females will be subjected to now, rather than deriding a concern over that as “faux privileged CIA feminism?” Can’t we just bear witness on a human level rather than do a mass “Yeah, too bad”?
