Tell me again how this woman’s suffering doesn’t matter.
Incredibly powerful interview with @sahraakarimi in Afghanistan this morning on @BBCRadioScot - I've taken this excerpt below because it is so brutally honest and from the heart, but please do go listen to the whole thing. @Fionasstalker

It definitely matters there's just nothing good the US is capable of doing about it.

At least acknowledge the moral complexity of the situation. The United States has been doing a lot about it for 20 years. That’s not even to say we should continue, but let’s stop pretending OK?

"doing a lot about it" Doing a lot of what, exactly? If what they did in 20 years could be dissolved in hours, what more can they do? Using vague assertions while telling others to "acknowledge the moral complexity" looks like hypocrisy.

Who isn't acknowledging the moral complexity? Who are these imaginary people that don't care about suffering?

It's horrible, I see photos of women in Afghanistan from the 80s and my heart breaks every time. There are no easy answers in war. There are ways to ease the suffering and death of women, children, and men but for many decades the U.S. has done far more harm than good.

The Taliban is very popular among most Afghan people, no amount of occupation or American bombs can change that. The only ones who gain from the occupation are 1. The Taliban because it increases their approval rating 2. Defense contractors

Who is not acknowledging this? We need to not have our troops in Afghanistan, PERIOD.

This situation wouldn't even exist if the first place if US hadn't interfered decades ago. The US isn't going to fix something they caused. It's overly complicated.

While we're acknowledging complexity, let's acknowledge this is *exactly* the moral trap the US govt has been using to justify and deflect criticism of *every* intervention.

Ooooh, the US was in Afghanistan to defend the women... 🤔 Silly me for thinking they were after the poppies and the lithium
