These days I still hear my 7th grade social studies teacher telling us gerrymandering was a corrupt practice in the past like carpetbaggers and robber barons gone for good due better laws....

Because they WANT to lose seats so they can go back to blaming the Republicans for why we can't get anything we actually need to survive. The idea that the "parliamentarian" and Joe Manchin are the only things preventing 15/min and M4A is a fucking joke, and they know it.

Well, there’s actually just one political party in the US and they play a Punch & Judy Show of partisan hostility, but everything plays out as expected - like, Democrats having their power diluted by gerrymandering, acting shocked when it happens, but doing nothing to stop it.
