Hierarchy dominance is what we have. The nature of the system is totalitarianism. The top 1/3rd of 1% control the wealth and public policy. Solution= mindfulness based pedagogy in the classrooms (change mindsets) and unionization (replace hierarchy dominance with democracy).

Can people ultimately be trusted not to take opportunities that are detrimental for the whole, eg tusking elephants for ivory? Or is it possible to regulate well enough to prevent exploitation of these opportunities that decrease value overall but benefit one

Capitalism can't be regulated. It will always buy the regulator.
