I would be angry with my mother for staying with someone who believes in punishment rather than convincing through education and therapy. Mommy is not really helping fix things but probably ensuring I stay not run away from an abusive relationship.

That’s a sick system. Stop the man from hitting & get some healthy food for the kids, learn the narrow road to being a human. Start with showing the political system for grown ups, stop using the old = don’t be co-dependent.
