This is what happens when the media and pundits basically write off the Afghans as incompetent and incapable of defending themselves. People who are good at amplifying cultural trends pick up on the alarm and excitement without actually understanding what’s happening there
1/ So basically we’re leaving Afghanistan after 20 years and the Taliban is now on its way to Kabul. Which means we wasted $2T and 2400 American lives for….nothing. The situation is not appreciably any better than it was when we went there.

Huge fan of yours — and your critique of the military-industrial complex — and the bad energy of warmongering in general. All of those things can be done without presenting the Afghans as defeated by the Taliban in the middle of what to them is an urgent and uncertain battle

If the Afghans are able to defeat or stalemate the Taliban without direct American assistance, that repudiates the many warhawks rooting for Afghanistan to slide into chaos a la 2014 Iraq. The interventionist position is that America’s military is necessarily deployed for peace.
