1/ On Julian Assange’s 50th birthday, it’s important to remember his case is not just about Julian Assange. It’s not even just about press freedom. It’s about horrible things being done by the US military that they did not want us to know about.

2/ Over 15,000 more Iraqi civilian deaths than has been reported. Blackwater mercenaries indiscriminately shooting into crowds. 700 civilians shot for getting too close to checkpoints, some of them men trying to get pregnant women to the hospital. Abuse. Rape.Torture. WAR CRIMES

3/ The government wants to freeze serious journalism when it comes to military secrecy because serious journalists go after the truth. Saying “he’s not a journalist” is particularly ridiculous given how many journalists in this country are more like fiction writers & they know it

4/ Our loyalty as citizens should not be to the government no matter what the government does; it should be to the principles of democracy & freedom. Assange revealed things classified not because they were a threat to our freedom but because they’re a threat to military secrecy.

5/ He is being treated so harshly for one reason only: to freeze disclosure and to freeze dissent. Injustice to Assange is an injustice to all of us. The crime here is not what he did; the crimes here are what he exposed. #FreeAssange

Yes—and anyone who thinks this statement somehow excuses Julian Assange’s persecutors doesn’t get the First Amendment— It guarantees a right to engage in journalism. While it is true that this does protect journalists—we wouldn’t have journalists if it didn’t apply to everyone.

WHY COULDN'T YOU HAVE EXPRESSED THIS DURING THE PRIMARIES?! Oh my GOLLY Marianne! Such a better message.

Is this why we don’t have any serious journalist left? @ggreenwald excluded of course. Is it because no one has the balls to stand up to the Deep State?

Speaking of which:
I talked here to @jimmy_dore about the court ruling in which the lawyers for MSNBC & Rachel Maddow successfully convinced a judge to dismiss a defamation lawsuit against her on that ground that even her own viewers know not to take her claims as factual: youtube.com/watch?v=hDRoqIgU…

Free speech isn’t just for journalists, but good point as well.

Love your words and your courage to say this. Finding hard hitting, unafraid journalists willing to take on truths appears to be a needle in the haystack. This man's incarceration is criminal, yet nothing happens. I am a Targeted Individual, I can relate to his injustice.

Yes, except writing poor quality journalism requires a lot less ability than writing fiction
