The problem is that the US economy is entirely based on military expenditures and has been since the 80's. Without that money being spent, and the annual increases to it, the economy collapses like a house of cards.

The military isn't to protect us from threats, it's to keep the arms manufacturers & contractors like Halliburton, Brown, Bechtel fat cats because they contribute huge sums to the lawmakers.
